San Gabriel Valley Tribune Endorses Dave Jones for Insurance Commissioner
Oct 27 2010

Jones, a Democrat, is the best of the two major-party candidates for protecting consumers and employers struggling to meet payroll in these challenging financial times from outrageous premium hikes. Jones, as an assemblyman, has shown he can stand up to the greedy health-insurance industry. The other candidate, Republican Mike Villines, another termed-out legislator, could do an adequate job, but in our view, falls short in terms of experience and knowledge.

San Jose Mercury News Endorses Dave Jones for Insurance Commissioner
Oct 17 2010

California today is better prepared than any other state to take advantage of federal health care reform enacted by Congress. Now voters need to elect an insurance commissioner with the will and expertise to make this a national model for health coverage. The commissioner will be California’s point person to get residents the best coverage possible for the lowest possible price while maintaining a healthy business climate for insurers.

The clear choice on Nov. 2 is Democrat Dave Jones, the Sacramento assemblyman who has served admirably as chairman of both the health and judicial committees in the Assembly.

Los Angeles Times Endorses Dave Jones for Insurance Commissioner
Oct 07 2010

His expertise is needed for the successful implementation of healthcare reform in the state.

The race for the office of insurance commissioner pits Assemblyman Dave Jones (D- Sacramento), a prolific legislator who has clashed often with insurers, against Assemblyman Mike Villines (R-Clovis), a former GOP leader who positions himself as a more conciliatory force. Just as important as the contrast in styles, though, is the difference in their expertise. Jones, who’s been chairman of the Assembly’s health and judiciary committees, demonstrates a much better grasp of the details and complexities of insurance regulation. The Times urges a vote for Jones.

Given the stakes involved, voters would be wise to pick a candidate with an active interest in health care reform – one who is the least beholden to health insurance companies. That candidate would be Democrat Dave Jones, an assemblyman from Sacramento who is termed out of office.
Jones has been a thoughtful and energetic legislator during his six years in the Assembly. He’s taken on ambitious legislation – on flood control, conservatorship reform, affordable housing and children’s health coverage.

Jones, Villines for state insurance commissioner
Los Angeles Times
May 05 2010

Democrat Jones and Republican Villines get our nod for this important post.

The state insurance commissioner is one of the most powerful consumer advocates in California, wielding unique influence over how auto, property and health coverage is priced and sold. With the current occupant, Republican Steve Poizner, running for governor, the race has attracted three state assemblymen who are barred by term limits from seeking reelection — Dave Jones (D-Sacramento), Hector de la Torre (D-South Gate) and Mike Villines (R-Clovis). Brian D. Fitzgerald, a longtime enforcement attorney in the Department of Insurance, faces Villines in the GOP primary, and four candidates are running unopposed in smaller parties.

Vote Dave Jones for insurance commissioner
San Francisco Chronicle

Lost in big-spending battles for governor and U.S. Senate is the sleeper race for state insurance commissioner. That’s too bad because the job affects everyday life for nearly everyone in California. If you drive, need health coverage or worry about floods, fire or earthquakes, then insurance rates and regulations matter. The state needs a fair-minded, aggressive leader in this post.

Another View: State must regulate health insurers’ rates
The Sacramento Bee
Mar 10 2010

Re “Blame game is a weak card to play” (Editorial, Feb. 25): The recent Assembly Health Committee hearing on health insurance rate hikes produced new evidence of the need for health insurance rate regulation.

Anthem Blue Cross announced last month an up to 39 percent increase in health insurance rates. They are not alone. Californians have suffered year after year with double-digit health insurance rate hikes. It’s no wonder that there are 6.7 million Californians without health insurance.

Proposition 17, funded by Mercury Automobile Insurance Company, is an attack on the voter-approved Proposition 103. Voters should defeat it at the polls on June 8, 2010.

Don’t be fooled by the name of this initiative – it’s misleadingly called the “Continuous Coverage Auto Insurance Discount Act” – because if it passes it could result in more uninsured drivers on California’s roads.

Assemblyman Dave Jones tried in 2007 and 2009 to pass legislation giving California greater authority to regulate health insurance companies’ rate increases. He failed both times — but this year may be different, thanks to Anthem Blue Cross’ outrageous plan to increase rates for individual policyholders by up to 39 percent.
And on Friday — the same day Jones reintroduced his bill in Sacramento — U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein dropped a legislative bomb proposing similar regulation on the federal level.
